How does a four-wheel-drive work?
As the name suggests, four-wheel-drives (also known as 4x4s) have four wheels that directly receive power from the engine. As a result, the amount of grip is significantly increased as the power is distributed to all four corners of the vehicle, instead of just two.
Most SUVs (sport utility vehicles) and all off-road cars come with four-wheel drive. The extra grip proves helpful when navigating difficult terrain, such as muddy fields and slippery lanes.
We all know how tricky and unpredictable British winter weather can be.
Therefore, if you live in a rural area and regularly face tricky driving conditions, a 4×4 is the perfect choice of vehicle. It can easily grip on slippery surfaces, as well as when accelerating or driving off-road.
However, not all motorists regularly drive in these conditions. If you live in a central urban area, you could easily use public transport should the weather prove difficult. Furthermore, many areas ensure their roads remain well-maintained by gritting them in adverse conditions.
Unfortunately, there are some disadvantages to four-wheel-drives.
Firstly, they are quite expensive to build. This is reflected through our hire prices, which start at £69.50 per day. This is still a fantastic deal, but is the most expensive of all our vehicles available to hire.
Secondly, four-wheel-drives add additional weight to your vehicle, while turning all four wheels utilises more power than just two. Therefore, 4x4s are far less fuel-efficient than two-wheel-drives.
However, their tireless nature and invincible attitude towards the elements mean 4x4s remain incredibly popular among motorists. Their traction and control is the prefect fit for those who regularly face tricky driving conditions, while their adventurous spirit always appeals to adrenaline junkies!
