Taking the title of the UK’s slowest motorway is the M25.
A report by vehicle tracking company Satrak found it clocked up an (un)impressive average speed of just 25.05mph in 2016. The M4, located between London and South Wales, fared little better. In close second, the motorway managed a measly average speed of just 30.46 mph.
Of the top five slowest motorways, three of the most congested were actually located further north. In West Yorkshire, the M606 averaged just 40.68mph, while drivers in Leeds grew frustrated with average speeds of 42.35mph on the M621. Elsewhere, the title of Scotland’s slowest motorway went to the M73; the motorway between Glasgow and North Lanarkshire clocked up an average speed of just 43.71mph.
Surprisingly, the slowest UK city traffic is not actually found in London.
In fact, Satrak concluded that it’s actually Cambridge that holds this title. With average speeds of 13.73mph, it would be quicker to travel by bike — just like 47% of Cambridge adults do every week!
Are you wondering where Norwich factors into all of this? Officially, it is the seventh slowest city in the UK, with motorists reaching average speeds of just 16mph. This may be due to the increase in vehicles in Norfolk and Suffolk: there are currently 400,000 more cars on our roads than the year 2000!
