Last year, the UK saw a record number of 18 year olds enter their first year of higher education.
Data released by UCAS found 241,585 students were accepted into either university or college in 2017. Up 1.1% on 2016, these figures boast a record high for the UK.
So as thousands more students make their way to university this September, Aspland Self Drive are here to help with the big move. From packing to transportation, we’ve got you covered!
Step #1 | What do you need to pack?
Many people are overwhelmed when it comes to packing for university. However, if you break down what you really need, you’ll find it’s really not as intimidating as it seems.
First, examine the list of things your accommodation will provide. Your halls will provide the basics; however, it’s your responsibility to bring a variety of utensils and furnishings. Therefore, start making lists and shop around so you can secure the best deals before you leave.
A useful tip is to slit your lists in categories. For example, kitchen (cutlery, pans, crockery); bedroom (bedding, clothing, towels) and study (stationary, textbooks, laptop). Be prepared to be brutal. You only have so much room, so be realistic with what you really need.
Also, a quick note on your wardrobe: don’t pack all your clothes! Wardrobe space can be limited, and you obviously won’t need your shorts and flip flops in the height of winter. Pack only what you need. You can always swap clothing when your return home for the holidays.
Step #2 | How will I transport my stuff?
Clearly label your boxes as this will make unpacking far quicker and easier. Also, remember not to throw away your boxes once you’ve unpacked — you will need them when you leave at the end of the year!
When it comes to transporting your items, Aspland suggest hiring one of our Luton vans. Our powerful and reliable vans come fully equipped with tail lifts, ensuring a smooth, straightforward way to load your heavy goods. It also offers plentiful room, something a regular car simply cannot provide. Therefore, you will avoid the endless game of Tetris when loading a too-small car!
Step #3 | What do I do on arrival?
First thing’s first, unpack! Start with your bedding and any personal touches (such as photos or fairy lights) to help you feel more settled. Then you can tackle your wardrobe and unpack in the kitchen.
Try and stock up your cupboards with the basics for Fresher’s week. Staples includes cereal, fresh fruit and vegetables. Plan a few meals (such as pasta or noodles) rather than relying on takeaways, as they soon add up. Also, try your best not to waste all your money (and cupboard space!) on alcohol.
Of course, take the time to get to know your new flatmates. Prop open your door as you unpack to encourage conversation, or perhaps play some of your favourite music. Shares notes on Fresher’s events you want to attend, and you’ll soon be settled in no time!
